Another Iowa county adopts moratorium on wind farms

Another county in Iowa has voted to adopt an indefinite moratorium on new wind farms.

It happened this week in Hardin County, a county located in central Iowa where the county seat is Eldora.

County supervisors voted 3-0 in support of a resolution placing the moratorium “effective immediately and indefinitely” on wind turbine permits.

The move was reportedly made to protect a 911 communications tower under construction near Hubbard, Iowa and to protect drainage infrastructure. The resolution stated the county also wants to prevent “any resulting nuisance from decommissioned commercial wind turbines through more robust decommissioning requirements.”

A wind energy company had obtained easement rights from more than 100 Hardin County landowners before supervisors passed the resolution.

Hardin County is not the first Central Iowa county to make such a move. Madison County enacted a one-year moratorium in October.
