Small earthquakes rattle West Texas

The U.S. Geological Survey is investigating Sunday’s cluster of three earthquakes that occurred in a span of more than six hours in West Texas.

The first quake was a magnitude 2.5 and struck around 8:05 a.m. Sunday. Its epicenter was approximately 40 miles west of Mentone, a small community near the border of Texas and New Mexico.

The second quake measured magnitude 2.6 and happened two hours later with an epicenter about 11 miles southwest of Pecos. The town is only about 20 miles southeast of Mentone.

It was about four hours later when the third earthquake, measuring 2.8 magnitude struck. It was around 2:30 p.m. and the quake’s epicenter was 22 miles southwest of Pecos, according to the USGS.
