Rig count continues downward slide in Oklahoma

Oklahoma’s oil and gas rig count continues to slip, dropping in the past week to only 86 operating rigs, a decline of 2.  A year ago, the state had 139 active rigs but not more rigs are in storage awaiting assignments.

Nationally, the rig count fell by 8 to reach 934.  The number of oil rigs fell by 6 to 764 while the number of gas rigs slipped by 2 to reach 169. The U.S. rig count is down 123 from a year ago when there were 1,057 active rigs in operation.

Oklahoma’s rig count is puny compared to the 454 operating in Texas where the count dropped by one in the past week. New Mexico’s rig count continues growing, thanks to the Permian Basin activity It reported 109 active rigs, an increase of 2 in the past week.

Colorado’s count of 32 was the same as a week ago. Kansas has 31 active rigs, a decline of 3 in the past week according to the Red Top Rig Report form the Independent Oil and Gas Service based in Wichita.

The number of rigs in Louisiana dropped by 2 to reach 59. North Dakota’s count of 47 was same as last week while Wyoming continued with 36 active rigs.

The Woodford plays in Oklahoma continued with 8 rigs while the Granite Wash added 2 to reach 4 drilling rigs. The Mississippian continued with only 2 rigs. The D-J Basin in Colorado and southern Wyoming reported 29 rigs, same as last week. The Eagle Ford in South Texas stayed at 66 while the Permian Basin added 2 rigs to hit 444. The Williston in North Dakota stayed at 47.
