Oklahoma regulators are keeping a close watch on an oil drilling area west of Kingfisher in the STACK because of continued earthquakes. The quakes occurred in the area 8 miles west of the city and included one measuring 3.6 magnitude.
State seismologist Jake Walter told the Oklahoman newspaper the quakes are the latest to be possibly connected to completion efforts of energy companies. One particular well drilled by Encana-Newfield saw completion operations stalled twice due to the swarm of earthquakes in the region. The well was finally completed in late July and the 3.6 magnitude earthquake occurred a few weeks later.
What raised the curiosity of earthquake experts is that the swarm of quakes has lasted this long.
