Water Resources Board to focus on dam safety

The heavy rains and deadly floods of May brought a renewed emphasis on small dams in the state of Oklahoma.  Some were believed to have been in danger of collapsing under the massive amounts of water collected in small lakes and ponds.

As a result, the Oklahoma Water Resources Board is holding a dam safety workshop next week in Oklahoma City. It’s described as a hands-on workshop on the slope stability of dam embankments.

John France with the Association of State Dam Safety Officials will lead the workshop along with representatives from Freese and Nichols, Inc. an engineering firm that specializes in water needs.

Discussions will focus on the following:

• Soil Mechanics Basics
• Soil Stresses, Soil Compression/Consolidation, and
Strengths of Soil
• Field Explorations and Data Collection, Laboratory
Strength Tests, and Strength Selection
• Limit Equilibrium Stability Analysis Formulations
• Instrumentation and Measurements
• Stability Analysis Loading Cases
• Seepage Through Dams and Existing Pore Pressures
• Slope Stability Remediation Approaches
The workshop will be held July 16-17 at the Associated General Contractors of America, 636 NE 41st street in Oklahoma City.
