Rig counts show dramatic loss in Oklahoma over a year

Activity in Oklahoma’s oil and gas fields is down nearly 28 percent compared to a year ago according to figures released this week by Baker Hughes Co.

Oklahoma’s current count of oil and gas rigs is 102, a decline of one in the past week but a drop of 40 compared to a year earlier.

One of Oklahoma’s oil plays, the Granite Wash which also takes in part of the Texas Panhandle has half the number of active rigs this week compared to a year ago. The count is 7, same as last week.

The Mississippian count continued with 4 rigs, down 2 from a year ago. The Woodfords in the state have 8 active rigs compared to the 12 rigs reported a year earlier.

Kansas saw a jump of 12 rigs from last week and is up to 22 according to the Red Top Rig Report published by the Independent Oil and Gas Service in Wichita.

Colorado’s count remained at 31 while Louisiana added one rig to reach 64. New Mexico’s count grew by two to hit 101 while North Dakota stayed at 57.

The count in Texas dropped by one to reach 480.  But it is also down 55 from a year earlier.

Nationally, the count this week is at 957, same as a week ago but down 82 from last year at this time.
