Google announced the continued expansion of its Oklahoma data center in Mayes County to a total investment of more than $3 billion, with increased local employment to more than 500 people.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the additional investment of $600 million in Oklahoma today at the data center campus, which is located in Pryor at the MidAmerica Industrial Park. This is part of Google’s $13 billion investment to expand data centers across the U.S. Google also announced a $6 million grant to the National 4-H Council to support computer science education in its Oklahoma chapters and other chapters across the country.
“We’re proud to make another $600 million investment in the great community of Mayes County,” Pichai said. “The Pryor Data Center is part of the engine that makes it possible for Google to help billions of people around the world. We look forward to being a part of this community for years to come.”
Google announced plans for the Oklahoma data center in 2007 and opened the initial $600 million facility in 2011. Google subsequently expanded the center in 2012, 2016 and 2018. The operation gets much of its electrical power from wind farms near Minco, Beaver and Woodward in western and northwestern Oklahoma.
“I am thrilled to see Google continue to invest in our state by expanding business, creating jobs, and bringing innovation to industry,” Governor Kevin Stitt said. “With an investment of over $3 billion, I look forward to seeing how the expansion of the Google data center will help diversify our strong economy and foster a pro-growth environment both in Mayes County and statewide.”
“Since Google announced they were coming to Mayes County more than a decade ago, they’ve reinvested in our local community in many ways including free public Wi-Fi in our downtown; STEM and art programs for our students; technology infrastructure for our higher ed institutions, training for our small businesses, teachers and nonprofits, technology and mentors for our classrooms,” Pryor Mayor Larry Lees said. “I’m so pleased Google is continuing its investment here. Those of us who live here know how special Pryor is, and we are glad Google sees that as well. For the City of Pryor, forward motion with Google and MidAmerica Industrial Park establishes a long lasting partnership. Only the passing of time will measure its significance and its immense potential. On behalf of all Pryor citizens, I thank Google for the partnership and for their confidence in us. We are committed to doing our part.”
