Weary of the stormy weather in Oklahoma?

Remember a year ago in Oklahoma?  Hardly any tornadoes. By April 27, 2018, the state had yet to record a tornado. And by that time, NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center estimated 229 tornadoes nationwide, well below the 10-year average of more than 400 tornadoes from 2005 through 2015.

This year?  As of Tuesday, Oklahoma had already recorded 124 tornado warnings just since May 17th.  There were 306 severe storm warnings along with 75 flash flood warnings.

On average, Oklahoma gets 56 tornadoes a year and May is typically the most active month.

The National Weather Service says the average number for May in Oklahoma is 23. Records since 1950 show the highest number recorded in the month was in May of 2010 when there were 91. But that’s obviously changed now. The least amount for May was 2005 when there were no tornadoes.

The highest number of tornadoes for any year was in 1999 when the state recorded 145.
