Oklahoma regains rig count position in US

Oklahoma regained its ranking as the state second highest state with an active oil and gas rig count. This week’s count grew by 2 to reach 105 active rigs while New Mexico, which had previously been second highest, reported a decline of 4 to bring its count to 102 rigs.

Nationwide, the count dropped by 2 to 988 with the number of oil rigs dropping 2 to 805. The number of gas rigs remained at 183. The US rig count is down 57 from a year ago when there were 1,045 active rigs.

Oklahoma’s count compares to Texas where the number grew by one to reach 485. Colorado remained at 33 while Louisiana saw a decline of one to 68.

The Red Top Rig Report published by the Independent Oil and Gas Service in Wichita showed the rig count in Kansas slipped by one to reach 28. Wyoming saw a decline of two to 30 while North Dakota’s rig count dropped one to 56.

Of the oil plays, the Permian Basin saw a decline of two rigs to 457. The Woodfords in Oklahoma remained at 8 while the Granite Wash stayed at 8 and the Mississippi continued with six active rigs.

The Williston in North Dakota dropped one to 56 while the Eagle Ford in South Texas stayed at 74.
