State regulators say Lake Okemah was not affected by December oil pipeline spill

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission issued a statement this week explaining an oil spill cleanup near Okemah Lake has been ongoing since December when workers removed a long-unused oil pipeline.

Matt Skinner, a spokesman for the Commission stated that the oil spill in question is contained in Buckeye Creek and is noyt in the lake.

“Precautions have and will continue to be taken to ensure the lake is not impacted by the oil now contained at the creek and the cleanup effort,” he stated in the release.

Skinner explained the oil came from an old pipeline.

“As part of the cleanup project, the pipeline was recently removed, revealing more residual oil. This was expected and the cleanup project continues,” he added.

The Corporation Commission’s Oil and Gas Division is working with the operator.
