Strong earthquake in northern Oklahoma

One of the strongest earthquakes in recent months in northern Oklahoma has geologists wondering at the U.S. Geological Survey and the Oklahoma Geological Survey.

The USGS measured it at 4.4 magnitude when the quake hit Tuesday morning at 7:28 near the community of Hayward which is about 21 miles southeast of Enid.

It’s in the region where there have been dozens and dozens of quakes registered in the past few years, prompting the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to target wastewater well operations.

Minutes after the 4.4 magnitude quake, an aftershock measuring 3.9 magnitude was recorded by the USGS. It was epicentered about 5 miles northeast of Marshall.
