OKC now a “Gig” City

Oklahoma City is now a “Gig” City, according to an announcement coming Thursday from Mayor David Holt and Cox Communications.

Alongside leaders from Cox Communications, Mayor David Holt will announce that residents of OKC and the surrounding communities now have access to gigabit internet speeds.

Gigabit speeds, equal to 1,000 megabits per second (Mbps), allow users to download 100 songs within 3 seconds, 1,000 photos in 16 seconds and a 2-hour movie in 8 seconds.

All Oklahoma City metro citizens now have access to these speeds, cementing the community’s place as one of the first municipalities in the country to have gigabit speeds available to all citizens, enhancing residents’ connectivity and quality of life.

With the average home expected to have more than 50 internet-connected devices by 2020, Cox prepared for its customers’ growing demands by rapidly expanding residential gigabit speeds, and now offers gig to all customers in the Oklahoma City metro area.

Cox Communications’ sizeable network investments, including a $10 billion network infrastructure investment, help Oklahoma City stay significantly ahead of demand and enable smart homes, smart businesses and smart cities – all of which depend on reliable fast internet service.

The announcement will be made at 11 a.m. at the Chamber of Commerce offices in downtown Oklahoma City.
