Oil spill leaves messy streets in south Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City fire crews were on the scene of what they labeled a “large oil spill” Wednesday night.

It was in the city’s south side near 52nd and South Byers Avenue where oil spilled from an open valve of some oil tank batteries.

“The majority of the product is on Byers Ave. and Stiles Ave.,” said a spokesman in making the announcement. There is product on several of the other streets in this area.”

The fire department indicated police, Storm Water Quality, representatives of the oil company and the OKC Street Department were on the scene helping with the incident.

The department asked media to notify drivers to avoid the area.

“We do not want vehicles driving through the product and spreading it to other streets. There is no danger but we want to minimize the affected area as much as possible.”

The department did not have a cause of the spill and leak but its HazMat Team was working with the oil company to determine the cause.
