Permian Basin shaken by two weekend earthquakes

 

West Texas was shaken by two earthquakes over the weekend, each in the Permian Basin where there has been massive oil and gas exploration.

The first measured 2.9 magnitude and occurred early Saturday morning at 2:49 near the town of Coyanosa, which is located about 66 miles west of Odessa, Texas.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake’s epicenter was about 3 miles deep.

The second quake was stronger and measured 3.1 magnitude near the community of Brand, Texas which is about 55 miles northeast of Big Spring, Texas. It struck Sunday morning at 9:21 and at a depth of 3 miles.
