Oil well leak contaminates creek near Purcell

The oil leak into Turkey Creek in Purcell involved an estimated 45 barrels of oil from a production tank over the weekend.

Matt Skinner, a spokesman with the Oklahoma Corporation Commission indicated the oil came from a tank and well operated by January Investments, LLC of Norman. A total of about 132 barrels of oil came from the tank but a berm surrounding the tank prevented more oil from entering the nearby creek.

OCC officials were on the scene Sunday when cleanup began. The remediation company, Environmental Cleanup Inc. of Oklahoma City was brought in to assist. The cause of the leak remains under investigation.

The 45-barrels of the oil leak managed to spread about 1.5 miles down the creek.  Purcell firefighters assisted with the cleanup. Booms were put in place along the creek to prevent the oil from migrating closer to the city.
