The U.S. Geological Survey reported the recording of two minor earthquakes in northern Oklahoma Sunday night.
The first measured only 2.3 magnitude and was recorded at 10:01 p.m. near the small town of Chester in Major County. Its epicenter was about two miles west of the town where a handful of weak earthquakes were recorded last week as well. The quake had a depth of about 3 miles.
Chester is a small town located about 28 miles east of Woodward.
The second quake was recorded a few minutes before midnight in a rural area about 14 miles south of Enid. It measured 2.8 magnitude with a 3-mile depth. The quake struck at 11:56 p.m. according to the USGS.
The quakes have been in the region where state regulators have taken steps to control wastewater disposal wells that were blamed for an increased number of quakes until about a year ago. Since then, the number of quakes has diminished. However, in the past two weeks, there has been a series of smaller quakes throughout the northern part of the state.
