Earthquakes rattle southern Kansas and northern Oklahoma

Residents near the small southern Kansas town of Perth were the latest to feel the shaking and rumbling of an earthquake in an oil and gas drilling zone.

A 3.0 magnitude quake was recorded around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday with a depth of about 3 miles. The U.S. Geological Survey indicated the epicenter was about 4 miles from the town of Perth which put it about 24 miles northwest of Arkansas City and 25 miles west of Winfield, Kansas.

A 2.6 magnitude quake was recorded Sunday afternoon near Coyle in Logan County, Oklahoma. The epicenter was only one mile west of the small town that has been the site of several earthquakes over the past week.

The Sunday night earthquake near Perth followed weekend earthquake activity in Southern Kansas and northern Oklahoma.  The largest was 3.6 magnitude and happened near Perry, Oklahoma.

A 2.8 magnitude quake was also recorded west of Wellington, Kansas on the same day.
