$34 million in US Energy Department Grants and None in Oklahoma

Of $34 million in U.S. Energy Department grants announced this week, no Oklahoma research firms received any money.

At least 219 grants to 183 small businesses in 41 states were announced by Energy Secretary Rick Perry.

Several went to Texas companies and some to research firms in Colorado.

One in Kansas, Powers and Zahr located in Augusta, Kansas received a $224,000 grant to carry out research on biofuel feedstocks.

A similar $224,000 grant went to Sandbox Semi-conductor Inc. in Austin, Texas for research in high performance computers.

Several Boulder, Colorado firms received grants as well. RadiaSoft LLC received more than $300,000 for studies into free electron lasers and other areas of research.

The grants are meant to allow small businesses to research technical feasibility of innovations that advance the mission of the Department of Energy. The median awards of the Phase 1 grants is $150,000.
