Nation’s Drilling Rig Count Shows No Letup in Search for Oil and Gas

The number of oil and gas rigs breaking the horizon around the U.S. just keeps growing, increasing by 5 in the pas week to reach 1,013.  Oklahoma’s count slipped by one to reach 127, according to figures from Baker Hughes Co. and the Independent Oil and Gas Service in Wichita, Kansas.

The national count included 5 more oil rigs to hit 820 while the number of gas drilling rigs remained at 192. The numbers reflect an increase of 156 since a year ago when there were only 857 oil and gas rigs active in the U.S.

In the past week, Canada’s numbers dropped by 9 to hit 93.

Of the oil and gas active states in the region, Texas of course remains king with 509 active rigs, an increase of 8 over the past several days. New Mexico’s count added one to hit 90 while the number of rigs in Kansas fell by two to 38. Colorado also dropped two to hit 29. Louisiana’s count increased by one to 58.

In North Dakota, the number of working rigs fell by two to 52.

Of the oil shale plays, the Permian Basin is what keeps Texas and New Mexico so strong. It has 458 rigs this week, an increase of 8.  Oklahoma’s Cana Woodford has 61, down four. The Haynesville in east Texas is even at 52 while the Eagle Ford in south Texas added one to hit 76. Colorado’s D-J Niobrara dropped one to slip to 23. The Mississippian added two rigs to hit four.
