State Regulators Encounter Problems in Investigation of Deadly Oil Rig Blast

Oklahoma Corporation Commission investigators remain on the site of the gas rig explosion in January that killed five workers in southeastern Oklahoma.

Documents made available by the Commission show several delays were encountered in recent days as specialists attempted to carry out more work exploring the bore hole.

“During initial wire line run to check for bridges in the well bore the gauge ring and approx 11′ feet of cable were lost in the hole,” stated the latest report.

“An attempt to retrieve the tools was made the following day. The attempt was unsuccessful,” added the document which also said a work-over rig was scheduled to be on site this week to remove the wear bushing and attempt to retrieve tools.

State regulators have been on the site ever since the Red Mountain Operating LLC rig exploded and burned near Quinton. The disaster occurred Jan. 23 and the resulting fire was so great, it caused the rig to collapse in a heap along with dozens of pipe.

Five men were killed outright and their bodies were recovered the next day. Since then, families of two of the victims have filed suit.
