Rig Counts Grow in Oklahoma and U.S.

The latest figures on the number of oil and gas rigs drilling for new energy showed a growth in the past week in the U.S. and in Oklahoma.

Figures from Baker Hughes Company and the Independent Oil and Gas Service reflected a growth of 8 nationally to reach 981. In Oklahoma, the number of rigs grew by 3 to reach 124 compared to one week earlier.

Nationally, the count of oil rigs grew by one to reach 800 while the number of gas rigs grew by 2 to hit 181. The latest figures show the U.S. added 225 oil and gas rigs from the 756 reported one year ago at this time. Since March 2017, the U.S. added 191 oil rigs and 35 gas rigs.

In the past week, the rig count in  Canada slipped by 4 to reach 302.

Of the states where oil and gas revenue is critical, the rig count in  Texas grew by one to reach 483. New Mexico added one to hit 88. Colorado’s count fell by 3 to reach 30. The count in  Louisiana slipped by one to  reach 59. North Dakota’s count dropped 2 to 47.

The count in  Kansas took a 22 percent hit in the past week as the Red Top Rig Report showed a drop of 8 to 29 active rigs.

Of the oil plays, the Permian basin in Texas and New Mexico is the obvious leader with a loss of one rig in the past week. The new count is 434 rigs. The Eagle Ford in South Texas remained at 70 rigs while Colorado’s DJ Niobrara dropped one to 25. Oklahoma’s Woodfords remained at 8 and the Granite Wash stayed at 12. The Mississippian stayed at 4 active rigs.
