A Correction for a Reuters Story on Oklahoma’s STACK

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission takes issue with a Reuters news article this week that focused on the state’s STACK play, mentioning how the state’s regulating certain wells because of earthquakes.

Spokesman Matt Skinner responded by stating that the Reuters article was “incorrect when it comes to earthquakes.”

When the reporters claimed that there are potential brakes on greater drilling activity because of a surge in waste water disposal wells linked to earthquakes, Skinner had a clarification.

He said the reporter was “confusing the action taken in the large AOI as action that pertains to the STACK. A small part of the STACK does go into the AOI; but not enough to make a difference in terms of our restrictions on wastewater disposal into that area.”

The spokesman explained the earthquake action that dominates the STACK is the protocol regarding seismic activity around hydraulic fracturing which “has nothing to do with wastewater disposal.”

Skinner went on to state that, “The STACK is a low water play….there are very few Arbuckle wells in the region and none being proposed, as they are not needed.”
