Rig Count Steady in U.S. and Growing in Oklahoma

The oil and gas rig count in Oklahoma jumped by 5 in the past week to reach 123 while nationally, the count was unchanged and remained at 975.

Baker Hughes Co. of Houston reported the U.S. added 7 oil rigs in the pat week to reach 798 while the number of gas rigs fell by 7 to drop to 177.

In the past year, the U.S. count grew by 224 from 751. Over the past 12 months, the nation added 201 more oil rigs and 24 gas rigs into the exploration factor. Meanwhile, Canada’s count fell by 7 to 318.

Of some of the oil and gas producing states in the Oklahoma region, only Kansas and Oklahoma saw growth in their rig counts. Kansas added 2 to reach 38 according to the Red Top Rig Report published by the Independent Oil and Gas Service in Wichita, Kansas. Texas remained unchanged at 479 while Colorado dropped one to 32. Louisiana fell by 2 to reach 59. New Mexico’s count was down 3 to 85. North Dakota dropped one to reach 48.

Of the oil the plays, the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico saw a decline of 4 to reach 433. The Mississippian in  Oklahoma and Kansas saw a growth of one to 4. The Granite Wash added one to reach 12. The Eagle Ford’s count grew by one to reach 70. The Woodfords in southern Oklahoma slipped by 2 to hit 8.

The D-J Niobrara in Colorado dropped one to hit 25.
