Oil and Gas Rig Counts Slip in Oklahoma but Hold Steady Nationally

The number of oil and gas rigs drilling for new energy in Oklahoma slipped by one in the past week to reach 121 while nationally, the count grew by 2 to hit 931.

Figures from Baker Hughes Co. and the Independent Oil and Gas Association headquartered in Wichita, Kansas show the industry holding steady.

Texas remains the champion of numbers with 459 active rigs, five more than a week ago. Its Permian Basin activity includes 400 rigs, an addition of three from last week. Of course, the Permian stretches into New Mexico where the number of drilling rigs reached 73, three more than a week ago.

Colorado’s count fell by 3 to reach 33. The count in Kansas hit 36, an increase of one. Louisiana added one to hit 63. North Dakota slipped by one to land at 46.

Nationally, the 931 total rigs included 2 more oil rigs making the count 751 oil rigs. The number of gas drilling rigs stayed at 180.

Over the past year, the oil and gas rig count grew by 307 from 624 including another 253 oil rigs.

Canada’s rig count fell by 3 and settled at 219.

Of oil and gas plays, Oklahoma’s Woodfords remained at 9. The Mississippian dropped two to hit four. The Granite Wash remained at 10. The Permian Basin added 3 and hit 400. The Eagle Ford picked up 3 more rigs ao hit 70.
