Major Rail Order for New Locomotives to Keep Ft. Worth Workers Busy

Workers will be busy in the coming year at the Fort Worth operations of GE Transportation where railroad locomotives are made.

That’s because CN Railway announced it plans to buy 200 new locomotives over the next three years to handle future growth opportunities.

The locomotives will be produced at the GE Manufacturing Solutions plant in Fort Worth beginning in 2018. CN’s order is described as the largest among Class I railways since 2014. The first units should be delivered in 2018 with the rest in 2019 and 2020.

A Class 1 railroad is typically a giant freight railroad that generates at least $289 million or more a year.

“We are bullish on the North American economy and on our ability to compete and win new business with our superior service model,” said Luc Jobin, CN president and CEO.

“CN’s steadfast commitment to serving the expanding needs of its customers across Canada and the United States is helping to turn around the North American locomotive market,” said Rafael Santana, CEO of GE Transportation.
