First Oklahoma Women in Aviation Day

The first ever Oklahoma Women in Aviation and Aerospace Day was recently held in Oklahoma City.

Airport managers and staff, air traffic controllers, military aviation, general aviation and corporate and business aviation were represented at the event held in the Atlantic Aviation hangar at Wiley Post Airport.

The day was made law by the Oklahoma legislature and a brunch was organized by the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission, the Oklahoma Airport Operators Association and Atlantic Aviation.

“The men and woman that make up the membership of our association recognize that there are organizations such as the 99’s and Women in Aviation which, for decades, have been carrying the burden of telling the female aviator and aerospace workers’ story,” said Lisa Jewett, President of the Oklahoma Airport Operators Association.

With the new law, December 9th will be commemorated annually as Oklahoma Women in Aviation and Aerospace Day.

“The heritage of aviation in our state is, indeed a rich one,” said Vic Bird, director of the Aeronautics Commission.
