Solar Farm to Help Power Air Force Base in New Mexico

A huge solar farm will be constructed to help provide electrical power to the Holloman Air Force Base near Alamagordo, New Mexico.

The Air Force will work with El Paso Electric to build the 5-megawatt plant which will be the utility’s first renewable energy project built for a military installation.

The plant will be made up of nearly 56,000 thin-film modules.  It will generate enough electricity to power more than 1,700 homes a year. It will be located on 42 acres within the Air Base located 9 miles west of Alamagordo.

Construction will be by M and W Energy Inc. and the plant is expected to be online in 2018. The project will reportedly reduce annual CO2 emissions by more than 9,000 tons which is the equivalent of taking 2,000 cars off the road. Experts say it will also save nearly 9 million gallons of a water a year.
