Rig Count: Oklahoma Gains Three, U.S. Drops by Four

The latest weekly oil and gas rig count revealed a drop for the nation while the rig count is up in Oklahoma and solid growth in Kansas, according to Houston-based Baker Hughes Company.

The nation’s rig count fell by four to reach 936, up from a year ago when it had 524 working rigs. Oklahoma added three new rigs with a new count of 127 compared to the 70 active rigs from a year ago.

Canada’s rig count slid by four in the past week, reaching 209. Canada had 165 working rigs a year ago.

While Oklahoma’s rig count jumped this week, Kansas tops the list with the addition of five new rigs for a total of 39, according to data from the Red Top Rig Report. The Sunflower State had 37 working rigs last year. Colorado was the only other state showing growth by adding one rig for a total of 34 from last year’s count of 19. Texas fell by three to reach 448 rigs compared to the 247 rigs reported a year ago. Louisiana lost a rig for a total of 66. Louisiana had 42 working rigs last year.

Of the various oil plays, the Arkoma Woodford in southeastern Oklahoma added two rigs, reaching 11. Three areas added a rig each: the Eagle Ford play in south Texas added one new rig for 69; the DJ Niobrara gained one for a total of 26 rigs; and the Barnett shale play increased by one for a new count of 8 rigs. The Permian basin, Cana Woodford and the Marcellus play experienced the greatest loss, dropping by two. The Permian now has 383 rigs remaining in the play. The Cana Woodford has a new total of 60 active rigs. Finally, the Marcellus now sits at 45 active rigs.
