Gas Leak Plagues Women’s Prison in OKC

Gas service at the Oklahoma City Community Corrections Center is expected to be off until Wednesday while crews continue searching for the leak.

The staff used large hotplates to serve hot meals to the 250 female inmates at the center. Space heaters and carbon monoxide detectors in the inmates’ rooms were reported to be functioning without issue allowing the women to remain warm.

The Corrections Department indicated the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety provided its showers at a nearby training facility to allow inmates to have hot showers.

“We are extremely grateful to the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety for allowing the use of its training facility showers so our women can have showers,” said Matt Elliott, a spokesman at DOC.

Gas service is expected to remain shut off at the facility until Wednesday, which is the earliest repairs can be completed once the leak is located.
