Legal Fight Grows in Keystone XL Pipeline Effort

TransCanada and the Trump administration have repeated their claim in Montana federal court that lawsuits by environmentalists fighting the Keystone XL pipeline should be dismissed.

In four separate filings, TransCanada and the federal government argued presidential approval of the proposed pipeline that would link to the Keystone line in Oklahoma offset any legal challenge.

Earlier this year, environmental and tribal groups filed suit against the pipeline that would be built across Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska. It was more than two years ago when the southern leg was completed in Oklahoma and Texas and carries oil from Cushing south to the gulf coast refineries.

The proposed new line would carry an estimated 830,000 barrels a day of crude oil produced in Canada. But the lawsuits challenging the Keystone XL line contend the Trump administration gave approval based on outdated environmental reviews and in violation of the National Environmental Policy Act.
