Details Revealed in Latest Electrical Power Merger in Kansas

A nearly 400-page government filing reveals some of the details in the latest proposed merger of Westar Energy and Great Plains Energy in Kansas, a more than $12 billion deal initially stopped last spring by the Kansas Corporation Commission.

As the Topeka Capital Journal reported this week, details of the six weeks of renewed talks were revealed in a 396-page filing made with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The filing was required as after the first attempt failed.

One detail indicated Topeka would maintain an operational headquarters but the corporate headquarters would be located in Kansas City, Missouri.

Another revelation was that a lucrative severance package would be included for Westar employees, even though the new merger plans don’t include such a package.

The KCC is still considering the latest merger plan.
