Harvey Threatens Energy Production in Gulf and State of Texas

Harvey, whether he’s a tropical depression or a hurricane, will have an impact on the nation’s gasoline and oil supplies as he hits Texas.

Anadarko and Shell evacuated workers and shut production from their platforms Wednesday in the Gulf of Mexico. ExxonMobil was doing the same, taking precautions as Harvey could be the first hurricane to hit Texas since 2008.

Shell announced Wednesday it had secured its Perdido platform and closed production as well as moving all personnel to shore. The Perdido produces about 100,000 barrels of oil at peak.

Anadarko also removed its workers and closed operations at its Boomvang, Gunnison, Lucius and Nansen facilities.

“We will continue to track Harvey and are prepared to remove additional personnel and shut in other operated facilities in the Gulf if necessary,“ Anadarko said.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center say the storm could generate up to 10 inches of rain in parts of Louisiana and Texas. They said hurricane conditions are possible late Friday or Friday night.
