North American Rig Count: Canada Leads With 15, U.S. Drops 2

Canada continues to show strong growth while the U.S. drops two active rigs, according to data released by Houston’s Baker Hughes Company.

A surge of 15 new rigs were added by Canada last week, raising the total rig count to 206, Compared with last year’s figures, the Canadian rig count has nearly doubled since last year.

In the U.S., the active rig count fell by two to reach a count of 950. Overall, the U.S. is up 488 rigs since last year.

Only two states continue to have triple digit active rig counts, with both showing a drop of three rigs last week.

Oklahoma dropped three rigs last week. The current statewide count of active rigs is now 131, which remains up by 72 from last year’s count of 59 just one year ago.

Texas also stumbled with a loss of three rigs but the Lone Star State retains the crown for possessing the most active rigs in the nation with a count of 463, an increase of 246 from a count of 217 rigs one year ago. Louisiana led the nation as the state’s rig count grew by four to hit 71 rigs. Louisiana is up 27 rigs from last year’s count of 44. North Dakota added one, setting at 54 working rigs. In New Mexico, the count slipped by two to hit 57 rigs.

The Red Top Rig Report indicates Kansas had no change in the number of active rigs since last week. The state count remains at 38 active rigs.

The Texas Permian Basin remains the hotbed of activity, gaining one active rig last week for a total of 374. Haynesville posted a positive gain of two rigs bringing a total of 45. The Williston play area gained one for a count of 54. The DJ-Niobrara area also gained a rig for a new total of 30. Eagle Ford took the largest hit, losing two rigs for a total of 78 rigs while the Arkoma Woodford play fell by one to reach 9 active rigs. The Barnett play lost one rig for a new count of 6 while the Mississippian also lost one for a total of 5.
