Superfund Program to be Examined in Senate Hearing

A subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works will hold a hearing Tuesday exploring the EPA’s Superfund program.

Entitled, “Oversight of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Superfund Program,” the hearing will be held by the Subcommittee on Superfund, Waste Management and Regulatory Oversight.

Three witnesses will testify including independent consultant Katherine Probst who recently wrote a paper on Superfund’s accomplishments and challenges. Two others will be Steven Nadeau of the law firm Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn and Jeffery Steers, director for regional operations for the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

Since taking over as administrator of the EPA, Scott Pruitt, the former Oklahoma Attorney General has complained how super fund sites have existed for years but the EPA has a history of doing little to resolve them. He has visited several such sites and complained of the lack of progress.

Oklahoma U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe is a member of the full committee but not the subcommittee that will holding the hearing.
