Rig Counts Grew Again in Past Week

The oil and gas rig counts in Oklahoma and across the nation increased again in the past week with a nationwide count growing by 7 to reach 908.  Oklahoma’s count increased by one to reach 123 working oil and gas rigs.

Figures from Baker Hughes Company of Houston, Texas and the Red Top Rig report of Wichita, Kansas indicate more growth in both oil and gas exploration.

The nation’s count reflects an increase of 504 rigs from one year earlier. It includes 406 more oil rigs and 98 more gas rigs.

In Canada, the count grew by 8 over the past week to reach 93. That’s 50 more than one year ago.

Of the active oil and gas states, Texas is still the most active state with 458 working rigs, a decline of one over the past week. Louisiana remained at 64. Colorado added 5 to reach 34. Kansas slipped by one to 35. New Mexico added one to hit 57 North Dakota’s count increased by one to reach 45.

Of the oil plays, the Permian is king with 362 working rigs, an addition of one over the past week.  It’s why Texas remains the largest oil and gas producer in the nation.

The Woodfords in Oklahoma have 9 working rigs, up from the four reported one year ago. The Eagle Ford in south Texas added one to reach 86. The Granite Wash in Oklahoma slipped by one to reach 9. The Mississippian remained at 9.
