Baker Hughes Rig Count: Texas Adds 6, Oklahoma Loses 7 Rigs

Baker Hughes company reported 7 new rigs were added in the U.S. last week, raising the total rig count to 877, according to data released by Houston’s Baker Hughes Company. Compared with last year’s figures, the U.S. rig count has increased by 462.

Only two states have triple digit active rig counts, with one showing a sharp gain and the other faltering after last week’s positive gain.

It was a volatile week for Oklahoma’s oil and gas rig count. Oklahoma dropped by 7 rigs after showing a gain last week. The current statewide count of active rigs is now 120, which remains up by 63 from a year ago.

Texas retains the crown for possessing the most active rigs in the nation with a count of 443, an increase of 6 for the past week. Texas is up 255 rigs from a count of 188 rigs one year ago. Louisiana’s count grew by 4 to hit 62 rigs. Louisiana is up 19 rigs from last year’s count of 43. Colorado added one, setting at 30 working rigs. In North Dakota, the count slipped by one to hit 43 rigs.

The Red Top Rig Report indicates Kansas has 29 active rigs with an additional 36 rigs pending next location assignment. still stacked from one year ago. The Kansas count reveals an increase of 4 rigs when compared with last year’s results.

The Texas Permian Basin remains the hotbed of activity, gaining 7 active rigs last week for a total of 349. The Permian Basin is up 210 rigs from last year’s count with signs of continued growth. The only other gain was one active rig in the Haynesville play bringing a total of 39. Cana Woodford took the largest hit, losing 4 rigs for a total of 51 rigs while the Marcellus play fell by 3 to reach 43 active rigs. The Ardmore Woodford, Arkoma Woodford, Mississippian and Williston plays lost one rig each.

After an initial surge in January, Canada’s count fell by 3 to reach 82. Canada remains 46 ahead of last year’s count.
