Oklahoma Nearly Double in Active Rig Count Since Last Year

Oklahoma is very close to surpassing last year’s rig count as it sits in second place for the total number of active domestic rigs in the nation. The state added three new rigs while the U.S. rig count increased by 12, according to the Baker Hughes rig count released a day earlier on Thursday due to Good Friday.

Canada lost 14 rigs for a total of 118. Canada is up 78 rigs when compared with data from a year ago.

The U.S. rig count increased by 8 to reach 847 active rigs. Overall, the U.S. is up 407 rigs from last year’s figures, nearly double the figure of 440 from last year.

Oklahoma added three rigs last week, bringing the cumulative number of active rigs to 125. Overall, Oklahoma’s rig count is up 62 rigs from last year’s count of 63.

Texas added two rigs but retains the top spot for number of active rigs. Texas now has 420 rigs, over double from last year’s count of 194 from a year ago.

New Mexico tied with Kansas, leading the way with an increase of seven rigs last week for a total of 58. The Red Top Rig Report for Kansas revealed an increase of seven rigs for a total of 33 active rigs. Louisiana lost two rigs for a total of 58. North Dakota added one new rig for a total of 43 while Ohio also added one rig for a total of 22.

The Permian basin saw the largest increase with eight rigs for a current total of 339, but is up by 198 compared to last year’s rig count.

The Eagle Ford play area in south Texas increased rig counts by three last week.

The Cana Woodford shale play located in south central Oklahoma saw an increase of two rigs.
