Bristow to Host DEQ and EPA Community Meeting Update on Local Superfund Site

A community meeting will be held in Bristow on Thursday to discuss an abandoned oil refinery which was designated as a Superfund site in 2013.

The Lorraine/Wilcox Oil Company off U.S. Highway 66 is the subject of the meeting hosted by the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 13, 2017, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Bristow Library, located at 111 West 7th Avenue.

Over 2,400 citizens live within a mile and nearly 6,150 people live within four miles of the site. The area is primarily rural and residential. The site includes the former Lorraine/Wilcox Refinery which was used by two different companies with overlapping boundaries from 1915 to 1965. The two refineries span approximately 150 acres. The site includes remnants of the former oil refining operations and tank farms as well as a church and seven residential properties.

DEQ and EPA representatives will provide a brief presentation to discuss the Superfund process and results from recent sampling events as well as future remediation plans.

The Lorraine/Wilcox site was added to the EPA’s Superfund list on December 12, 2013.
