Environmental Meeting in Guymon on $25 million Casino

A Thursday night public meeting will be held in Guymon on the environmental assessment of a proposed $25 million Native American casino near the city.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs in Anadarko is holding the public meeting for the proposed Shawnee Tribe ‘Golden Mesa’ casino to be located about 3.5 miles southwest of Guymon.

The BIA, in its announcement of the meting said that based on the Environmental Assessment for the casino dated in November of 2016, “It has been determined that the proposed action will not have a significant impact on the quality of the human environment.”

The government agency indicated an Environmental Impact Statement would not be required and a Finding of No Significant Impact has been proposed for signature of the Assistant Secretary of the BIA.

The casino will be built on nearly 103 acres and be nearly 42,309 square in size, sitting on the south side of State Highway 54.

In making the announcement nearly eleven months ago, Shawnee Tribe chief Ron Sparkman said it would “become a destination location and economic engine for the area.”

“The new center will position Guymon and the entire Oklahoma Panhandle as an entertainment and tourist destination point, attracting visitors from Texas, Kansas, New Mexico and Colorado,” stated the announcement.

An estimated 175 jobs will be created with an annual total payroll of $3.7 million.

The meeting on Jan. 5 will be held at 8 p.m. at the Texas County Activities Building in Guymon.
