The Cushing earthquake has prompted State Insurance Commissioner John Doak to offer earthquake insurance help beginning Monday. He and his aides will be in Cushing at the Chamber of Commerce office, 1301 E. Main on Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.
“There is significant damage in Cushing,” said Doak after touring the damage. “Many people here are on edge. For those with earthquake insurance, we want to help with the claims process so they can recover as quickly as possible.”
Doak pointed out a standard homeowners’ insurance policy does not cover earthquake damage. Homeowners have to buy it through an endorsement or through a stand-alone policy.
While touring Cushing, Doak spoke to residents, many who said they had not purchased earthquake insurance because they didn’t think the policy would cover damage caused by manmade quakes. But Doak says the fast majority of earthquake insurance policies sold in Oklahoma cover damage from both natural and manmade quakes.
