The Baker Hughes rig count, released early due to the Thanksgiving holiday showed a national increase of 5 rigs to reach 593 while the count in  Oklahoma remained unchanged at 79.

In the past week, the national count added three oil rigs to reach 474 while the number of gas rigs grew by two to hit 118. Still, the national oil and gas rig count is 151 down from 744 a year ago and that includes 81 oil rigs and 71 gas rigs.

In Canada, drilling backed off slightly as the rig count fell by 10 to reach 174. And that’s still down from ten a year ago.

Oklahoma’s oil plays were mostly unchanged with the exception of the Mississippian where the count grew by one to reach 4, according to Baker Hughes.

The Permian in northwest Texas slipped by one to reach 228 while the Eagle Ford remained at 38 rigs.

Overall, the state of Texas reported a total of 279 working rigs, an increase of three. Colorado added two to reach 22 and Louisiana remained at 52, New Mexico’s county fell by two to 29 while North Dakota dropped one to fall to 33.

While Baker Hughes reports no working rigs in Kansas, the Red Top Rig Report issued by the Independent Oil and Gas Service reports the state dropped eleven in the past week and fell to 37 working rigs. A year ago, the state of Kansas had 45 active rigs.
