Former Chesapeake Energy executive Marcus Rowland has taken over as chairman of the board of Houston-based Swift Energy Company.

Rowland previously had been the Chief Financial Officer at Chesapeake Energy and his term as chairman will expire in 2019. The company said his appointment followed the retirement of CEO Terry Earl Swift and CFO Alton Heckaman Jr. in August.

Swift held the CEO title since 2001 and was board chairman since 2016. He has more than 40 years experience in the oil and gas sector.

“Rowland brings a wealth of relevant industry and operating experience to the company, highlighted by his current leadership role as found and senior managing director of IOG Capital and as the former executive vice president and chief financial officer of Chesapeake Energy Corporation,” said Michael Duginski, chairman of Swift Energy’s nomination and strategy committee. “His industry insights and leadership will be invaluable as we move the company forward.”
