What is being called the nation’s largest wind energy project has been approved in Iowa by the state’s Utilities Board.

The $3.6 billion wind turbine operation will generate up to 2,000 megawatts of electricity, according to its developer, Des Moines-based MidAmerican Energy. That’s enough to power nearly 800,000 typical homes. MidAmerican Energy says the project will see 85 percent of the company’s customer needs in Iowa through wind energy in the next four years.

The wind farm will be comprised of 1,000 turbines but the location is still being determined, according to Bill Fehrman, CEO and President of MidAmerican Energy. Completion will take at least three years.
