Oklahoma Avoids List of Worst States for Car and Truck Pollution

The Natural Resources Defense Council is out with a report showing which states are worst when it comes to carbon pollution in the U.S.  No, Oklahoma is not one of them.

But Texas, California, Florida, New York, Illinois and Ohio are. The Council’s report says seven states, California, Florida, New Jersey, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia generate more than 40 percent of their carbon pollution from transportation. The group says on a national average, transportation accounts for about one-third of carbon pollution.

Texas leads the way with 641 million metric tons of carbon dioxide a year while California’s totals  353.1 million metric tons. The pollution in Oklahoma totals103.1 million and the pollution in Kansas is 72.8 million. Pollution in Colorado is 90.5 million metric tons while Arkansas has 67.8 million metric tons.

The pro-Obama environmental group says a poll it conducted found 79 percent of Americans want automakers to keep improving fuel economy for cars and trucks including 97% of Democrats, 94% of Independents and 93% of Republicans. Another 79% say they want the government to increase fuel efficiency standards.
