Wichitas and Caddos Fight Over Construction Site and Environmental Claims

wichitaTribeIn a fight with the Caddo Nation over the construction of a history center near Anadarko, the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes asked an Oklahoma City federal judge recently to throw out the Caddo Nation’s lawsuit challenging the site of the center.

The Caddo Tribe contends the construction site holds sacred Caddo burial sites and filed suit to block the Wichita Tribes’ new history center off U.S. 281 near Anadarko.

But in a Friday court filing, the Wichita Affiliated Tribes accused the Caddo Nation of resorting to directly contradicting its own prior statements in “its desperation to keep its case alive.” It also accused the Caddo Nation of “playing fast and loose with the facts in attempt to maintain this action.”

The Wichitas contend the Caddos lack standing to bring claims that the center’s construction threatens ancestral graves under the National Historical Preservation Act and the National Environmental Policy Act.
