Oklahoma’s Rig Count Tumbles while Nation’s Count Grows

The latest figures from Baker Hughes Company in Houston, Texas show Oklahoma’s number of working oil and gas rigs dropped by two in the past week, reaching a total of 57. At the same time, the national count grew by four to hit 408.

A year ago, Oklahoma had 106 working rigs and there were 868 across the U.S. In the past year, the nation suffered a drop of 317 oil rigs and 140 gas rigs, all because of the energy downturn.

Canada’s most recent count dropped by two to reach 41 working oil and gas rigs.

Oklahoma’s count compares to Texas where there are 176 working rigs, an increase of three over the past week but still far below the 364 rigs a year ago. In Kansas, there are two working rigs, down from the 14 last year at this time. Colorado has 16 rigs, same as a week ago and more than half below the 39 last year. Louisiana dropped by one to reach 47 in the past week. North Dakota remained at 22 and New Mexico added two to reach 20.

Of the oil plays, the Mississippian in Oklahoma and Kansas remained at three for the week, down from 23 a year ago. The Granite Wash has six working rigs, a decline of eleven over the past year. The Arkoma and Ardmore Woodfords have a combined total of four working rigs while a year ago, there were a dozen.

The Permian Basin in west Texas and eastern New Mexico still has the most rigs across the nation with 142. That represents an increase of 5 but the total remains far below the 233 last year at this time. The Eagle Ford in south Texas has 29 rigs, same as a week ago and considerably less than the 103 last year.oilrigok
