With the stroke of her pen, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin signed a bill into law on Monday proclaiming a bridge over the North Canadian River near Seiling to be the “Meteorologist Gary England Bridge.”

The bridge spans the river on U.S. Highway 60 north of the hometown of England who later went on to a storied career in severe weather forecasting for KWTV News 9 in Oklahoma City.  He retired in the summer of 2013  after 41 years with News 9 and was honored with the bridge naming by the Oklahoma legislature.

Under the bill, “The Department of Transportation shall cause suitable permanent markers to be placed at the bridge bearing that name.” It takes effect on July 1, 2016.

England was a graduate from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and meteorology. He served in the U.S. Navy and joined KWTV in 1972.
