Enid Considering Sales Tax to Finance Kaw Lake Water Pipeline

The city of Enid is considering a possible election to allow voters to decide on a sales tax hike to fund a Kaw Lake water pipeline project.

City Commissioners might ask voters to create a new 1/4 percent tax to pick up where a quarter percent tax funding capital improvements will end in March 2018.

City Manager Jerald gilbert said it would bring the total sales tax rate for the water pipeline project to one percent starting in 2018, according to a report in the Enid News and Eagle.

If an election is held and approved, the sales tax would remain in effect until 2052.

“We started looking at $451 million, now we’re looking at about $360 million, said Mayor Bill Shewey. “During the last three years, it’s been determined, through a lot of study, that the Kaw Lake pipeline project was the best long-term source for water.”
