Hard to Find Gasoline that Isn’t Blended with Ethanol

More than 95 percent of the gasoline used by cars and trucks in the U.S. is now blended with at least 10% ethanol, according to a new report from the Energy Information Administration. At the same time, the use of ethanol-free gasoline is declining..

The government indicates that since most U.S. gasoline is sold as E10, the only way to increase ethanol use in all cars and trucks is to adopt fuel blends with higher volumes of ethanol such as E15 and E85.

But E85 can only be used in flex fuel vehicles. Testimony given before Congress by EIA officials indicated flex fuel vehicles make up nearly 7% of the on-road fleet of light-duty vehicles in the U.S.

While some service stations advertise “No Ethanol” in their gasoline, it’s a sign that some gasoline containing no ethanol, known as E0 is still produced. The EIA says 494,000 barrels a day or 7.6 billion gallons was produced in 2015.
