Oklahoma’s gasoline prices jumped nearly 8 cents in the past week, reaching a new average of $2.08 a gallon, according to the latest report from AAA Oklahoma. A week ago, the average was $2 a gallon.
Nationally, the gas prices are at their highest point for the year, just days away from the start of the Memorial Day holiday. The new average is $2.28 a gallon, an increase of six cents a gallon over the past week and 15 cents higher for the month.
Why the increase in Oklahoma? AAA Oklahoma offered this explanation: “Drivers in Oklahoma and surrounding states have seen prices climb higher on the week with every state posting an increase of a nickel or more per gallon at the pump. Gas prices are reportedly responding to a number of refineries in the region going offline to conduct unplanned maintenance, including Marathon’s Galveston Bay, Texas plant, which is one of the country’s largest and most complex refineries. Despite the region’s production challenges, the market remains well supplied with gasoline and prices are expected to remain relatively low.”
Around the state, the lowest average prices are in Muskogee at $2.01 a gallon. Idabel and McAlester are at $2.03 a gallon. Ardmore is at $2.04 and Shawnee and Enid each have an average of $2.05.
The highest average belongs to Stillwater where motorists are paying $2.18 a gallon, an increase of 12 cents a gallon over the past week.
